Hub-and-Spoke Network

ShipBob Logistics’ US hub-and-spoke network is designed to streamline how your orders move through the supply chain. Inventory is stored at “spoke” fulfillment centers positioned closer to where your end customers live. These sites support DTC and B2B order fulfillment and perform value-added services like kitting and retail display assembly.

When an order is placed, it’s picked and packed from the spoke location and then routed through a regional “hub” sortation center, where packages are consolidated and handed off to last-mile carriers. This structure improves carrier pickup timing, expands delivery windows, and ensures better utilization of trucks and linehauls, ultimately lowering shipping costs.

Regional Sort Centers & Receiving Hubs

Our automated sortation centers serve as regional hubs for both inbound inventory routing and outbound order consolidation in the US. When your inventory arrives, it’s received at a ShipBob hub, where it goes through rigorous quality checks, 3D scanning to select optimal packaging, and product verification. From there, it’s sent to the fulfillment center(s) of your choice across the country based on demand, storage needs, and shipping efficiency.

On the outbound side, once orders are fulfilled at spoke locations, they’re sent to the nearest ShipBob regional hub to be sorted (by carrier, delivery speed and destination). This unlocks faster, more cost-effective shipping with frequent pickups everyday.

Zone Skipping via ShipBob Logistics’ Middle-Mile Network

Our middle-mile network enables zone skipping in the US, when possible, to speed up delivery and reduce the number of touchpoints across the order’s journey.

When an order is zone skipped, it’s transported via ShipBob’s middle-mile network from the regional hub closest to the spoke fulfillment center to the hub nearest the end customer. From there, it’s handed off to a last-mile carrier for a shorter zone delivery. Because ShipBob manages the majority of the order’s journey, shipments bypass multiple shipping zones and are consolidated with others heading to nearby destinations. This results in faster transit times, fewer handoffs, and a lower risk of damage. Plus, zone-skipped orders come with enhanced tracking data via TrackBob, a branded tracking page both in the dashboard and accessible by your end customers.

ShipBob’s Inventory Placement Program (IPP)

IPP is ShipBob’s automated inventory distribution service for brands that outsource fulfillment to us in the US and want to place more of their inventory closer to their end customers. It’s a key driver for reducing transit times and shipping costs and helping brands scale quickly while keeping lean Ops teams.

With IPP, merchants simply send inbound inventory to one of our regional hubs and we use historical order data and forecasting models to balance and distribute it via our middle-mile network to the optimal spoke locations across regions, also accounting for demand and seasonal spikes. This not only reduces lead times and improves storage allocation, but it also enables faster and more affordable fulfillment while keeping inventory levels optimized across the network.

The Technology That Powers ShipBob Logistics

At the core of ShipBob Logistics’ infrastructure is our proprietary Decision Engine, built to automate complex fulfillment decisions that drive down the cost and speed of fulfillment and delivery. It continuously evaluates hundreds of data points, like inventory levels, destination, and carrier performance, when routing every order. That means smarter inventory distribution, optimal carrier selection, faster picking and packing, and fewer touches across the supply chain.

ShipBob Logistics has been great for us. Rather than sort every DTC package by carrier and service ourselves, everything goes into one bin and ShipBob picks it up, brings it to their facility, and sorts it there. It’s saved us enormous amounts of time and effort, and it’s been really great to hand off that aspect of logistics to ShipBob.

VP of Operations and Logistics at Elwood Clothing

With ShipBob’s Inventory Placement Program, we’ve saved so much money by distributing inventory strategically across ShipBob’s network instead of only shipping from our US warehouse. And we continue to see our average transit time decrease and it will only get lower over time.

ShipBob automatically routes orders to the nearest warehouse to the customer. We receive notifications confirming the warehouse selected for shipping, eliminating inventory discrepancies between the warehouses. Efficient inventory allocation significantly impacts our outbound shipping costs, and with ShipBob, managing this has been effortless.
