Shipping fragile items

Although ShipBob has processes in place to reduce risk in shipping fragile items, some issues can arise while orders are in transit that are outside of our control. When shipping damages occur, we file claims on behalf of the merchant at no additional cost. We also help you choose the fulfillment center(s) in which to store your inventory that are closest to your end consumers to help reduce the distance traveled and time in transit.

ShipBob’s order fulfillment process

ShipBob takes care of the entire retail fulfillment process for you. Here is an overview of how ShipBob’s home furnishings fulfillment process works.

1. Receiving

During this stage, a supplier, manufacturer, or ecommerce brand ships the required products to our warehouse, where our team will receive the shipment(s). The term ‘receiving’ refers to the acceptance of incoming inventory to be stored before it’s sold. During this step, a ShipBob fulfillment expert will make sure that all the items that were sent have arrived and are in good condition. From there, we store the inventory safely until items are ready to be picked.

2. Picking

Once an order is placed on your store, the picking process begins. We locate the item(s) so the entire order can be packed in the next step. Our proprietary warehouse management system (WMS) automatically assigns similar orders with inventory in the same area of the warehouse to the same picker to reduce the number of steps required to pick orders for a more efficient workflow.

picking list is automatically generated, which includes the items ordered, quantity, and where each product is located in the fulfillment center. Each unit that’s picked is scanned from the inventory container so inventory counts are updated in real-time, providing up-to-date stock levels for merchants.

3. Packing

Once items are picked, the next step is to securely pack orders and add the shipping label. ShipBob offers standard packing materials: brown boxes, plain bubble mailers and poly bags, packing tape, and dunnage, and are included at no extra cost. We choose the best packing materials for each order to both protect your products and achieve the lowest practical dimensional weight. We also allow our clients to use custom packing materials to put their brand front and center.

4. Shipping

By outsourcing fulfillment to ShipBob, you can take advantage of our negotiated shipping rates with major shipping carriers. Our carrier partners pick up packages from our fulfillment centers daily, which are sorted by each shipping service. From there, shipping carriers take care of the shipping, most often by truck or air shipping.

Order management

At ShipBob, we track your orders from A to Z. Filter orders by status, search for specific orders, see a quick timeline view of where your order is in the fulfillment process (e.g. when an order is picked, packed, or shipped), easily find shipping-related information (e.g., weights, dimensions, or carrier service), and get a quick snapshot of any orders that require action.

With order management software for your direct-to-consumer and wholesale shipments, you can manage subscriptions, make changes to your orders post-purchase, map your store’s shipping options to ShipBob, and automatically share tracking information with your customers.

Reporting and analytics

To provide you with visibility into our operations and performance, and also hold ourselves accountable, ShipBob’s free analytics tool is packed with charts to help you with everything from year-end reporting, to better supply chain decision-making.

Data can be a competitive advantage, and our reports show an analysis of which fulfillment centers you should stock, days of inventory left before you run out, impact of promotions on stock levels, each shipping method’s average cart value, shipping cost, and days in transit, your fulfillment cost per order, storage cost per unit, and much more.

End-to-end customer experience

We care about the customer experience as much as you and strive to be an extension of your team. From custom branded boxes to free plain packaging, ShipBob works with you to provide the unboxing experience you want. We also help you offer the fastest, most cost-effective shipping options to meet your customers’ expectations.

As soon as an order ships, tracking is pushed back to your store. We also offer return management services, allowing customers to generate return shipping labels and track returns, while getting your products processed and back into your available inventory as efficiently as possible.
