Size and weight both typically influence cost, but there is a lot of variation. You\u2019ll pay a specific, standard&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pe.usps.com\/BusinessMail101?ViewName=Parcels\">Parcel Select<\/a>&nbsp;oversized price when you have a box whose length is more than 108 inches, but the combined length and girth is less than 130 inches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re shipping something that\u2019s larger than this, you\u2019ll need to work out a specific rate with USPS, and some USPS retail locations may not be able to help you ship a box that size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll pay more than the standard oversized rate and could see very high costs if the box is heavy. There also may be limitations, such as having to ship via&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pe.usps.com\/BusinessMail101?ViewName=PackageServices\">USPS Retail Ground<\/a>, which doesn\u2019t provide a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pe.usps.com\/text\/dmm300\/153.htm#ep1678681\">guaranteed delivery time<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ups\">UPS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For UPS, you\u2019ll want to consider both the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ups.com\/us\/en\/help-center\/billing-payment\/avoid-charges.page#contentBlock-15\">Over Maximum Limits<\/a>\u201d and the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ups.com\/us\/en\/help-center\/billing-payment\/avoid-charges.page#contentBlock-16\">Large Package<\/a>\u201d designations to understand what you can ship and how. Perhaps the most important thing to note right away is that you can ship Large&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Package parcels through the UPS small package delivery network. However, if your box is big enough to be in the Over Maximum Limits segment, it must be shipped via&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwapps.ups.com\/fctc\/timeandcost?loc=en_US\">UPS\u2019 freight services<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Large packages are those where the longest side exceeds 96 inches by itself or exceeds a combined 130 inches when calculating length plus girth (2 x width) + (2 x height). You\u2019ll face an additional charge and a minimum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shipbob.com\/blog\/billable-weight\/\">billable weight<\/a> of 90 pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the package meets any of the following characteristics, then it enters into the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ups.com\/us\/en\/help-center\/billing-payment\/avoid-charges.page\">oversized limits for UPS<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Weight is above 150 lbs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Packages is more than 165 inches in length and girth combined<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The length alone is more than 108\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These large packages will be subject to Over Maximum Limits charges and will be subject to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shipbob.com\/blog\/dimensional-weight-explained\/\">dimensional weight<\/a>&nbsp;calculations. You can calculate these and other costs&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwapps.ups.com\/fctc\/timeandcost?loc=en_US\">on UPS\u2019s freight site<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fedex\">FedEx<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For FedEx, you\u2019re looking at an oversized package when its length is over 96\u201d or 130\u201d in length and girth combined. While FedEx will apply its dimensional weight calculation to your package, it does note that you\u2019ll face a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fedex.com\/content\/dam\/fedex\/us-united-states\/services\/Fees_Shipping_Information.pdf\">minimum 90 lbs billable weight<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the company, you should still have access to its US and international ground services as well as U.S. Express Package, though you\u2019ll get stuck with a $90 oversize charge per package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During peak annual shipping times, you\u2019ll also face an additional&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fedex.com\/en-us\/shipping\/current-rates\/surcharges-and-fees.html#peak-surcharge\">oversized peak surcharge<\/a>&nbsp;of $37.50 per package. Upcoming peak dates run from October 21st, 2019 to January 5, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dhl\">DHL<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DHL has an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhl-usa.com\/en\/express\/shipping\/shipping_advice\/surcharges.html\">oversize package cost<\/a>&nbsp;of $89 per parcel. You\u2019ll face this fee if you\u2019ve got any piece (including a pallet) that weighs more than 70 kg (154.3 lbs.) or has a single dimension in excess of 120 cm (47.24 inches).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More of its guidelines are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhl.com\/content\/dam\/downloads\/g0\/express\/shipping\/weights_and_dimensions\/weights_and_dimensions_en_lm.pdf\">here<\/a>, but the company suggests that you contact them directly before shipping an oversized package to see what services are available in your area and timeframe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-options-if-your-package-is-oversized\">4 options if your package is oversized<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, you\u2019ve got your box all packed up and ready to go, but then you realize the weight of it will cost you. What\u2019s a business to do? Here are a few options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pay-the-fee\">Pay the fee<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pay the fee in order to get their package on time or meet another need. This typically isn\u2019t a great option for getting products to customers because fees can be high, but in a crunch it\u2019s worth it. Check with your carrier to see the exact fee, such as FedEx\u2019s $90 per package cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ship-freight-instead\">Ship freight instead<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Often, couriers will charge you a freight price instead of a regular shipping price.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shipbob.com\/blog\/introduction-freight-shipping\/\">Freight shipments<\/a>&nbsp;can help you avoid most of these big costs, and you\u2019re not always paying much more compared to shipping a regular package.
